3. False Hopes of Salvation.
Pro 14:12 There is a way which seems right to a man, but the end of it is the ways of death.
Comment: As the way of sin and wickedness does, it promising much carnal pleasure and mirth; there is a great deal of company in it, it is a broad road, and is pleasant, and seems right, but it leads to destruction; so the way of the hypocrite and Pharisee that trusts to his own righteousness, and despises others, and even the righteousness of Christ; or however does not submit to it, but tramples upon him, and counts the blood of the covenant an unholy thing, and so is deserving of sorer punishment than the profane sinner; J. Gill
A. Education :
Ti 6:20 O Timothy, guard the Deposit, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of falsely-named science,
1Ti 6:21 which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
2Ti 3:6 For of these are those who creep into houses and lead captive silly women loaded with sins, led away with different kinds of lusts,
2Ti 3:7 ever learning and never able to come to the full knowledge of the truth.
They may learn many things, but the true nature of religion they do not learn. There are many such persons in the world, who, whatever attention they may pay to religion, never understand its nature. Many obtain much speculative acquaintance with the “doctrines” of Christianity, but never become savingly acquainted with the system; many study the constitution and government of the church, but remain strangers to practical piety; many become familiar with the various philosophical theories of religion, but never become truly acquainted with what religion is; and many embrace visionary theories, who never show that they are influenced by the spirit of the gospel. Nothing is more common than for persons to be very busy and active in religion, and even to “learn” many things about it, who still remain strangers to the saving power of the gospel. Barnes Notes.
B. Church Membership. This will never save anyone. Only By Grace and through Faith are we saved. Ephesians 2:8 Living in a garage will not make you into a car.
C. Good Works.
Eph 2:8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God,
Eph 2:9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
D. Baptism in some church.
1Co 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel; not in wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
Baptism does not save. |
E. Proper Environment. If the Idyllic environment is what is needed then why did Adam and Eve sin in the Garden of Eden when it was the proper environment.
F. Keeping the Law.
Gal 2:16 knowing that a man is not justified by works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ; even we believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith in Christ, and not by works of the Law. For all flesh will not be justified by works of law.
G. Confirmation. Religious Confirmation is not Conversion or Transformation of the Heart.
Mat 18:3 and said, Truly I say to you, Unless you are converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven.
Except ye be converted - Unless ye be saved from those prejudices which are at present so baneful to your nation, (seeking a temporal and not a spiritual kingdom), unless ye be clothed with the spirit of humility, ye cannot enter into the spirit, design, and privileges of my spiritual and eternal kingdom. The name of this kingdom should put you in mind of its nature. -
1. The King is heavenly;
2. His Subjects are heavenly-minded;
3. Their Country is heavenly, for they are strangers and pilgrims upon earth;
4. The Government of this kingdom is wholly spiritual and divine. Adam Clark.
H. Living by the Golden Rule.
Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Isa 64:7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
K. Tithing. [the tenth]
Isa_1:11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
Isa_43:23 Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.
L. Serving in secular organisations such as Peace Corps or Medicins sans Frontiers.
This will not save you from the Wrath of God to come. It is a facade of good works.
M Serving in the Church. All this will be burnt up in the judgment.
