The DEITY of the HOLY SPIRIT

He has all the Divine Attributes. [From Willmington's Guide to the Bible pp 641-642]
1. He is OMNIPRESENT
Psa 139:7  Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from Your presence?
David conclude it is impossible to escape from God’s Spirit.

2. He is OMNISCIENT [knows everything]
1Co 2:10  But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God.
1Co 2:11  For who among men knows the things of a man except the spirit of man within him? So also no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

3. He is OMNIPOTENT.
Gen 1:2  And the earth was without form and empty. And darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved on the face of the waters.

4. He is ETERNAL.
Heb 9:14  how much more shall the blood of Christ (who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God) purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

5. He is called God.
Act 5:3  But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart for you to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Act 5:4  While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own authority? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.

6. He is equal with the Father and the Son in the Trinity. He does occupy a place of submission within the Godhead, however He has all the Divine attributes. His perfect equality with the father and the Son is shown in the following verses:

Mat 3:16  And Jesus, when He had been baptized, went up immediately out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him.
Mat 3:17  And lo, a voice from Heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matt 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit up into the wilderness, to be tempted by the Devil.
Mat 4:2  And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterwards hungry.
Mat 4:3  And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If You are the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Mat 4:4  But He answered and said, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."
Mat 4:5  Then the Devil took Him up into the holy city and set Him upon a pinnacle of the Temple.
Mat 4:6  And he said to Him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down. For it is written, "He shall give His angels charge concerning You, and in their hands they shall bear You up, lest at any time You dash Your foot against a stone."
Mat 4:7  Jesus said to him, It is written again, "You shall not tempt the Lord your God."

Joh 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, so that He may be with you forever,
Joh 14:17  the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see Him nor know Him. But you know Him, for He dwells with you and shall be in you.
Joh 14:18  I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.
See  also Jn 14:26; and Jn 15:26

Eph 2:18  For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.

2Co 13:14  May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Mat 28:19  Therefore go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20  teaching them to observe all things, whatever I commanded you. And, behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the world. Amen.

The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit - In the Old Testament

1. The Holy Spirit in Creation

Gen 1:2  And the earth was without form and empty. And darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved on the face of the waters. MKJV
the Spirit rûach  רוּח
BDB Definition:1) wind, breath, mind, spirit 1a) breath
1b) wind
1b1) of heaven
1b2) quarter (of wind), side
1b3) breath of air
1b4) air, gas
1b5) vain, empty thing
1c) spirit (as that which breathes quickly in animation or agitation)
1c1) spirit, animation, vivacity, vigour
Strong’s movedרחף
râchaph raw-khaf' : A primitive root; to brood; by implication to be relaxed: - flutter, move, shake.
The Spirit of God brooded over the face of the waters

the Spirit: A. Clark says “It is sufficiently evident from the use of the word in other places, that the Holy Spirit of God is intended; which our blessed Lord represents under the notion of wind, Joh_3:8; and which, as a mighty rushing wind on the day of Pentecost, filled the house where the disciples were sitting, Act_2:2, which was immediately followed by their speaking with other tongues, because they were filled with the Holy Ghost, Act_2:4. These scriptures sufficiently ascertain the sense in which the word is used by Moses.
Moved - מרחפת  merachepheth, was brooding over; for the word expresses that tremulous motion made by the hen while either hatching her eggs or fostering her young. It here probably signifies the communicating a vital or prolific principle to the waters. As the idea of incubation, or hatching an egg, is implied in the original word, hence probably the notion, which prevailed among the ancients, that the world was generated from an egg.”
The Holy Spirit as the Agent of the Godhead was hovering, brooding and infusing life into the world that then was.

Willmington illustrates the part played by the Holy Spirit in creation. He says, “Let us consider an important executive who determines to build a spacious and expensive home. He thus employs an architect to design the necessary plans for His home. The architect then secures a competent contractor to follow his blueprints. In this illustration, the executive is the father, the architect the Son, and the contractor is the Holy Spirit.
Psa 104:30  Thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; And thou renewest the face of the ground.
Job 26:13  By his Spirit the heavens are garnished; His hand hath pierced the swift serpent.
Job 33:4  The Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

So the Holy Spirit “moved” refers to the gentle motion of a dove as she quietly hovers over her nest, imparting her body heat upon the eggs until they are hatched. Willmington’s Guide to the Bible p.645

What an illustration of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives as He broods over us and cares for us bringing to fruition all His Divine Purposes. Cry out "Holy Spirit Hover and Brood over my Life today"

2. The Holy Spirit in a sinner, David when Nathan the Prophet accused him of adultery with Bathsheba.

Psa_51:11  Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me.
Cast me not away from thy presence - Banish me not from thy house and ordinances.
Take not thy Holy Spirit from me - I know I have sufficiently grieved it to justify its departure for ever, in consequence of which I should be consigned to the blackness of darkness, - either to utter despair, or to a hard heart and seared conscience; and so work iniquity with greediness, till I fell into the pit of perdition. While the Spirit stays, painfully convincing of sin, righteousness, and judgment, there is hope of salvation; when it departs, then the hope of redemption is gone. But while there is any godly sorrow, any feeling of regret for having sinned against God, any desire to seek mercy, then the case is not hopeless; for these things prove that the light of the Spirit is not withdrawn.A.C.
Throw me not away as worthless; banish me not, like Cain, from thy face and favour. Permit me to sit among those who share thy love, though I only be suffered to keep the door. I deserve to be for ever denied admission to thy courts; but, O good Lord, permit me still the privilege which is dear as life itself to me. “Take not thy Holy Spirit from me.” Withdraw not His comforts, counsels, assistances, quickenings, else I am indeed as a dead man. Do not leave me as thou didst Saul, when neither by Urim, nor by prophet, nor by dream, thou wouldst answer him. Thy Spirit is my wisdom, leave me not to my folly; he is my strength, O desert me not to my own weakness. Drive me not away from thee, neither do thou go away from me. Psalms - The Treasury of David; C.H.Spurgeon
Application: Pray for the Lord to keep convicting you and teaching you how to walk with God intrue holiness and separation.

3. The Holy Spirit dwells with him who is humble and contrite.
Isa_57:15  For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

Humble: shâphâl BDB Definition:
1) low, humble 1a) low (in height) 1b) low (in station), humble (of condition or spirit)
1c) humiliated 1d) lowly (as subst)

I dwell ...with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit; not only with the other divine Persons, and with those high ones, but with such who are broken under a sense of sin; not merely in a legal, but in an evangelical way; not only with the weight of divine wrath, but with a view of pardoning grace and mercy; and such souls are humble as well as contrite; have the worst thoughts of themselves, and the best of others; they are humble under a sense of sin and unworthiness, and submit to the righteousness of Christ for their acceptance and justification before God; and ascribe the whole of their salvation to his free grace alone; and become cheerful followers of the meek and lowly Jesus; with such the Lord dwells, not merely by his omnipresence and omnipotence, but by his spirit and grace; or in a gracious way and manner, by shedding abroad his love in their hearts, and communicating his grace to them; and which he usually does under the ministry of the word and ordinances, and which may be expected: and his end in so doing is, J.Gill

to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones; who are sometimes in a very lifeless and uncomfortable condition; grace is weak; sin is prevalent; they are under a sense of divine displeasure; under the hidings of God's face, and attended with various afflictions and adverse dispensations of Providence: now the Lord dwells with them, to revive and quicken them; which He does by His gracious presence; by the discoveries of His pardoning love and grace; by the application of precious promises; and by granting large measures of His grace, so that they become comfortable in their souls, and are quickened to the fresh exercise of grace, and discharge of duty. All this seems to be spoken for the consolation of the Lord's people in their low estate,. J.Gill

4. The Holy Spirit was Grieved

Isa_63:10  But they rebelled, and grieved His Holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.
Isa_63:11  Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit in the midst of them?
Notes by J. Gill
But they rebelled
Against the Lord, not withstanding he thought so well of them; did so many good things for them; sympathized with them, and showed them so many favours; wretched ingratitude! they rebelled against the Lord in the times of Moses, at the Red sea, and in the wilderness, by their murmurings, unbelief, and idolatry; wherefore he calls them a rebellious people, and says they were such from the day he had been with them; and so in later times, in the times of the judges, and of the prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel, they rebelled against God their Parent, Protector, and King; see (Deuteronomy 9:7 Deuteronomy 9:24 ) ( Isaiah 1:2 ) ( Ezekiel 2:5-7 ) and so they did in the times of Christ, whom they rejected as the Messiah, and disowned as their King, and still continue in their rebellion, ( Luke 19:14 ) :
and vexed or [grieved] His Holy Spirit;
the Spirit of God the Father, who pitied them in all their afflictions; or the Spirit of the Angel of his presence, that redeemed and saved them; for the Spirit is both the Spirit of the Father and of the Son; and he is holy in his nature and operations, and the author of sanctification in the hearts of his people; him they vexed and provoked to anger against them, speaking after the manner of men, by their sins and transgressions; rejecting his counsels and instructions by Moses, and by the prophets in later times, in and by whom he spake unto them, and by the apostles in Gospel times; for the Jews, as their fathers before them ever did, resisted the Holy Spirit of God in the evidence he gave of the Messiah, which must be very provoking, ( Acts 7:51 ) ( Ephesians 4:30 )

5. The Holy Spirit in Daniel

Dan_4:8  But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, saying,
Dan_4:9  O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.
Dan_4:18  This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
Dan_5:11  There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

Daniel was filled with the Spirit.
He was given the ability to tell visions and to interpret them. The Spirit of God revealed secrets to him and he became a famous counsellor to the Kings in Babylon and Persia.

The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit. His Person

1. The Person of the Holy Spirit.
The Godhead consists of the Persons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit Matthew 28:19-20;Matt 3:16-17. The Holy Spirit exhibits all the characteristics of Personality.

A. He has a Mind.

Rom 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.
Rom 8:27  But He that searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes on behalf of the saints according to the will of God.
MIND - φρόνημα phronēma Thayer Definition: 1) what one has in the mind, the thoughts and purposes
In verse 27, the first, “He” refers to the Son of God,cp. Rom 8:34; and the second, “He” refers to the Holy Spirit Himself. The Believer has the Intercession of both the Person of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Willmington’s Guide to the Bible p.641

B. He searches out the Human Mind.

1Co 2:9  But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him."
1Co 2:10  But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
God reveals the Things of Heaven to the believer by the Holy Spirit.

C. He has a Will.

1Co 12:8  For to one is given a word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
1Co 12:9  and to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
1Co 12:10  to another the working of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another discerning of spirits, and to another different kinds of tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues.
1Co 12:11  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
(1) The Holy Spirit is a “person.” For, he acts as a person; distributes favors, confers endowments and special mercies “as he will.” This proves that he is, in some respects, distinguished from the Father and the Son. It would be absurd to say of an “attribute” of God, that it confers favors, and distributes the various endowments of speaking with tongues, and raising the dead. And if so, then the Holy Spirit is “not” an attribute of God. Barnes.

D. He forbids

Act 16:6  Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the Galatian region, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit from speaking the word in Asia,
Act 16:7  having come to Mysia they attempted to go to Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.
Paul and His Evangelistic band were forbidden to go into Asia and Bithynia by the Holy Spirit.

E. He speaks.

- to Philip in the desert Acts 8:29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near, and join yourself to this chariot."
- To Peter on the Housetop. Act 10:19  Now while Peter pondered about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, men are seeking you. Act 10:20  Arise therefore, go down and go with them, without hesitation; for I have sent them."
- To some Elders in Antioch. Act 13:2  Now as they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work which I have called them."
- To the Seven Churches of Asia Minor Rev 2:7,11,29,3:6, 13, 22 Rev 2:7  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

F. He loves

Rom 15:30  Now I beg you, brothers, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in prayers to God on my behalf,
Rom 15:31  that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints,
Rom 15:32  so that in joy I may come to you through the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you.

G. He Grieves

Eph 4:30  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
“And beware of grieving the Holy Spirit of God” WNT
This is addressed to Christians, and it proves that it is possible for them to grieve the Holy Spirit. The word used here -  λυπεῖτε  lupeite - means properly to afflict with sorrow; to make sad or sorrowful. It is rendered to make sorry, or sorrowful, Mat_14:9; Mat_17:23; Mat_18:31; Mat_19:22; Mat_26:22, Mat_26:37; Mar_14:19; Joh_16:20; 2Co_2:2; 2Co_6:10; 2Co_7:8-9, 2Co_7:11; 1Th_4:13. It is rendered “grieved,” Mar_10:22; Joh_21:17; Rom_14:15; 2Co_2:4-5; Eph_4:20; and once. “in heaviness,” 1Pe_1:6. The verb does not elsewhere occur in the New Testament. The common meaning is, to treat others so as to cause grief.

H. He Prays.

Rom 8:26  In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness; for we do not know what prayers to offer nor in what way to offer them. But the Spirit Himself pleads for us in yearnings that can find no words,

The Two-fold Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

The Twofold Coming of Lord Jesus Christ.

A. At the Rapture of the Church.

1Th 4:13  Now we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, concerning those who have died, lest you be sorrowful as those who have no hope.
1Th 4:14  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, thus also God will bring with Him those who die in Jesus.
1Th 4:15  For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall by no means precede those who are dead.
1Th 4:16  Because the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first.
1Th 4:17  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

The Rapture Explained.
Todd Strandberg comments The rapture is an event that will take place sometime in the near future. Jesus will come in the air, catch up the Church from the earth, and then return to heaven with the Church. The Apostle Paul gave a clear description of the rapture event in his letters to the Thessalonians and Corinthians.
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." (1 Thess, 4:16-18).
"Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality" (1 Cor. 15:51-53).
The timing of the rapture is not known. From the Word of God and from sound reasoning--something Jesus used quite frequently--I hope to prove the reality of the pretribulation rapture.
The word "rapture" comes from Paul's "caught up" remark in verse 17. The words "caught up" are translated from the Greek word harpazo, which means "to carry off," "snatch up," or "grasp hastily." The translation from harpazo to "rapture" involved two steps: first, harpazo became the Latin word raptus; second, raptus became the English word "rapture." <www.raptureready.com>

B. The  Future Coming after the tribulation - with His People .

Mat 24:29  "Immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give its light; and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
Mat 24:30  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Mat 24:31  And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
But immediately, suddenly after a slow development, rather than immediately following, or unexpectedly. Mat_24:36 shows that our Lord did not intend to define the length of the interval, or to encourage us to define it.
A Popular Commentary on the New Testament - After the tribulation of those days, not the tribulation attending the destruction of Jerusalem, but the period of trial which belongs to the ‘last times,’ for the following reasons: 1. In Luk_21:24, the period of Jewish dispersion and the fulfilling of ‘the times of the Gentiles’ is put before this prediction, while the expression in Mar_13:24, also permits the supposition of a long interval. 2. The reference to the destruction of Jerusalem is attended with the greatest difficulties. It takes all the expressions of Mat_24:29-31 in a figurative sense, but the figure exceeds any reality that occurred in those days. The interval between the horrors of the siege and the actual destruction itself was too short to allow of any events worthy of such a figurative representation as we find here. 3. To refer it to a merely providential coming of Christ in judging and purifying nominal Christendom, is not at all in keeping with the specific character of the representation.
The sun shall be darkened. A reference to the events attending the destruction of Jerusalem seems impossible. So long as the prophecy is not yet fulfilled, its exact meaning cannot be insisted upon. Two views: (1.) Visible phenomena in the heavens at the visible appearance of Christ; in which sense the rest of the verse needs little explanation except to determine the difference between ‘the stars’ and ‘the powers of the heavens.’ The former may mean meteors and the latter the host of stars, or better, the former the stars in general, the latter the greater heavenly bodies that affect the earth (the solar system). This view suggests also the possibility of actual changes in the physical universe to prepare for ‘the new heavens and the new earth.’—(2.) Spiritual events to occur at the same time. We add the most plausible interpretations of this character: ‘The sun shall be darkened,’ i.e., the knowledge of Christ, the Sun of the Church and the world shall be obscured; the moon shall not give her light; the reflected light of science, which derives its excellence only from Christ, the true Sun, shall cease to guide (or it may refer to heresy and unbelief in the Church, for that leaves her merely a scientific or temporal organization); the stars shall fall from heaven; the leaders and teachers of the Church shall become apostates: the powers of the heavens (the greater heavenly bodies) shall be shaken: the influences which rule human society shall be disturbed. Others refer the whole to the fall of heathenism with its worship of Nature (sun, moon, and stars), but this is less probable, since terrifying occurrences seem to be meant (see Luk_21:25-26).E-Sword.

Jude 14  Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men, saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints,
Jud 1:15  to execute judgment against all, and to convict all the ungodly among them about all their ungodly deeds which they have committed impiously, and about all the harsh words which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him."
to execute judgment, i.e to pronounce the doom, and see that it is carried out. Then follows the description of these sinners. The characteristic of the antediluvians, as of those whom Jude addresses, is ungodliness: four times is this quality named, first and last and midst, in the description.
to convict (an intensive form of the English verb) in their consciences and before the world. The double meaning of the Greek word is only half represented by ‘convince,’ and only half by ‘convict;’ both meanings are in the word, though the second meaning is the predominant one here.
and of all the hard things—rough, coarse; used here in its ethical sense, and especially to describe arrogant blasphemy (1Sa_2:3; Mal_3:13)—‘stout,’ the outcome of a hardened heart.
The Rider on the White Horse - Faithful and True

Rev 1:7  Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, and those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will wail because of Him. Even so, Amen!.

Rev 19:11  And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.
Rev 19:12  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns, having names written, and a name written that no one knows except Himself.
Rev 19:13  And He is clothed in a robe having been dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
Rev 19:14  And the armies in heaven were following Him on white horses, having been dressed in fine linen, white and clean.
Rev 19:15  And out of His mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, so that with it He might strike the nations. And He will shepherd them with an iron rod. And He treads the winepress of the wine of the wrath of Almighty God.
Rev 19:16  And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name having been written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Rev 19:17  Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, "Come and gather together for the great supper of God,
Rev 19:18  so that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who ride on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great."
Rev 19:19  And I saw the Beast and the kings of the earth and their armies, having been gathered together to make war against Him who rode on the horse and against His army.
Rev 19:20  Then the Beast was apprehended, and with him the False Prophet who had performed the signs before him, by which he had deceived those who received the mark of the Beast and those who worshipped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Rev 19:21  And the rest were slain with the sword which proceeds from the mouth of Him who rode on the horse. And all the birds gorged themselves with their flesh.
