Soteriology : Conversion - 5. Remission of Sins.

Act 10:43  All the Prophets give witness to Him, that through His name whoever believes in Him shall receive remission of sins.

Remission G859 Strong’s ἄφεσις aphesis [af'-es-is]
From G863; freedom; (figuratively) pardon: - deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission.

1. Remission of sins - The phrase, αφεσις ἁμαρτιων, means simply the taking away of sins; and this does not refer to the guilt of sin merely, but also to its power, nature, and consequences. All that is implied in pardon of sin, destruction of its tyranny, and purification from its pollution, is here intended; and it is wrong to restrict such operations of mercy to pardon alone. A. Clark

a. The sending back or the putting away of sin.

Mat 1:19  But Joseph, her husband to be, being just, and not willing to make her a public example, he purposed to put her away secretly. [to dismiss her or to forgive her secretly]
Put her away secretly - The law of Moses gave the husband the power of divorce, Deu_24:1. It was customary in a bill of divorce to specify the causes for which the divorce was made, and witnesses were also present to testify to the divorce. But in this case, it seems, Joseph resolved to put her away without specifying the cause; for he was not willing to make her a public example. This is the meaning here of “secretly.”
Both to Joseph and Mary this must have been a great trial. Joseph was ardently attached to her, but her character was likely to be ruined, and he deemed it proper to separate her from him. Mary was innocent, but Joseph was not yet satisfied of her innocence.
We may learn from this to put our trust in God. He will defend the innocent. Mary was in danger of being exposed to shame. Had she been connected with a cruel, passionate, and violent man, she would have died in disgrace. But God had so ordered it that she was betrothed to a man mild, amiable, and tender: and in due time Joseph was apprised of the truth in the case, and took his faithful and beloved wife to his bosom. Thus, our only aim should be to preserve a conscience void of offence, and God will guard our reputation. We may be assailed by slander; circumstances may be against us; but in due time God will take care to vindicate our character and save us from ruin. See Psa_37:5-6 Barnes.
Cp. Mat 5:31  It was also said, Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.

b. Forgiveness.

Luk 6:37  Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.
Forgive - The mercy and compassion which God recommends extend to the forgiving of all the injuries we have received, or can receive. To imitate in this the mercy of God is not a mere counsel; since it is proposed as a necessary mean, in order to receive mercy. What man has to forgive in man is almost nothing: man’s debt to God is infinite. And who acts in this matter as if he wished to receive mercy at the hand of God! The spirit of revenge is equally destitute of faith and reason. A. Clark
Eph 4:32  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.

2. The Old Testament Example of Remission of Sins.

Read Leviticus 16.
The High Priest brought two goats to the tabernacle on the Great day of Atonement. One goat was killed and its blood sprinkled in the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies.

Concerning the Second Goat we read. Lev 16:21  And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the sins of the sons of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send away by the hand of a chosen man into the wilderness.
Lev 16:22  And the goat shall bear on him all their sins to a land in which no one lives. And he shall let the goat go in the wilderness.

Keil & Delitzsch Commentary: “ After the completion of the expiation and cleansing of the holy things, Aaron was to bring up the live goat, i.e., to have it brought before the altar of burnt-offering, and placing both his hands upon its head, to confess all the sins and transgressions of the children of Israel upon it, and so put them upon its head. He was then to send the goat away into the desert by a man who was standing ready, that it might carry all its sins upon it into a land cut off; and there the man was to set the goat at liberty. עִתִּי, ἁπάξ λεγ. from עֵת an appointed time, signifies opportune, present at the right time, or ready. גְּזֵרָה, which is also met with in this passage alone, from גָּזַר to cut, or cut off, that which is severed, a country cut off from others, not connected by roads with any inhabited land. “The goat was not to find its way back” (Knobel).

Christ removed our sins at Calvary.

Psa 103:11  For as the heavens are high above the earth, so is His mercy toward those who fear Him.
Psa 103:12  As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Barnes Notes: So far hath he removed our transgressions from us - That is, he has put them entirely away. They are so removed that they cannot affect us any more. We are safe from all condemnation for our sins, as if they had not been committed at all. Compare the notes at Isa_43:25; notes at Isa_44:22.

Heb 9:11  But when Christ had become a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building
Heb 9:12  nor by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered once for all into the Holies, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Heb 9:13  For if the blood of bulls and of goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifies to the purifying of the flesh,
Heb 9:14  how much more shall the blood of Christ (who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God) purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Do you realise that Christ has fulfilled the Types of the Day of Atonement. He has carried our sins away NEVER TO REMEMBER THEM AGAIN.  WE are Forgiven. We are pardoned.
