The Various Ministries of the Holy Spirit.

Some think that the Holy Spirit only came down to earth at Pentecost. False. He has at least eleven assigned ministries of which the first three are in the Old Testament Era. Willmington.

A. His ministry concerning the Universe.

All three Persons of the Trinity were there taking part in the Creation of the Universe. Genesis 1.

a. The Father

Psa 19:1  To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the expanse proclaims His handiwork. cp Gen 1:1

b. The Son

Joh 1:3  All things came into being through Him [the Son] , and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

Joh 1:4  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. MKJV

c. The Holy Spirit

Psa 104:30  You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth.

Job 26:13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Cp. Gen 1:2

B. His Ministry  concerning the Scriptures. by Willmington p. 645

He is the AUTHOR of the Holy Scriptures. No These three functions of the Holy Spirit in relation to the Scriptures.

a. Revelation : that process whereby the Holy Spirit spoke to the more than forty human writers of the Bible, the message He wanted them to transmit.

b. Inspiration :that process whereby the Holy Spirit guided the very pen of these forty writers so that the message was accurately written.

c. Illumination : the process whereby the Holy Spirit takes the written Word when it is preached and read, and enlightens those human ears who will hear it..

A Greek Manuscipt of the New Testament

1. He is the Author of the Old Testament. 2 Sam 23:2;  Isaiah 59:21;

2Pe 1:21  for never did any prophecy come by human will, but men sent by God spoke as they were impelled by the Holy Spirit.

2Ti 3:15  and that from infancy you have known the sacred writings which are able to make you wise to obtain salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

2Ti 3:16  Every Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for convincing, for correction of error, and for instruction in right doing;

2Ti 3:17  so that the man of God may himself be complete and may be perfectly equipped for every good work.

2. He is the Author of the New Testament.

1Co 2:13  Of these we speak--not in language which man's wisdom teaches us, but in that which the Spirit teaches--adapting, as we do, spiritual words to spiritual truths.

1Co 14:37  If any one deems himself to be a Prophet or a man with spiritual gifts, let him recognize as the Lord's command all that I am now writing to you.

Rev 1:10  In the Spirit I found myself present on the day of the Lord, and I heard behind me a loud voice which resembled the blast of a trumpet.

Rev 1:11  It said, "Write forthwith in a roll an account of what you see, and send it to the seven Churches--to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea."

C. His Ministry concerning Israel.

1. He came upon these Israelite Leaders.

a. Joseph. Gen 41:38  And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the spirit of God is?

b. Moses  Num 11:17  And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

c. Joshua Num 27:18  And Jehovah said to Moses, Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand upon him.

In whom is the Spirit - This must certainly mean the Spirit of God; and because he was endued with this Spirit, therefore he was capable of leading the people. How miserably qualified is that man for the work of God who is not guided and influenced by the Holy Ghost! God never chooses a man to accomplish his designs but that one whom he himself has qualified for the work. A.Clark.

d. Othniel Jdg 3:9  And when the sons of Israel cried to Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a deliverer to the sons of Israel, who delivered them, Othniel, the son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz.

Jdg 3:10  And the spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel and went out to war. And Jehovah delivered Chushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, into his hand. And his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.

e. Gideon Jdg 6:33  Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites, and the sons of the east were gathered together, and went over and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

Jdg 6:34  But the spirit of Jehovah came to Gideon, and he blew a ram's horn. And he called the Abiezrites after him.

f. Jephthah Jdg 11:29  Then the Spirit of Jehovah came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead passed over to the sons of Ammon.

g. Samson Jdg 14:6  And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he tore it as he would have torn a kid; and nothing was in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. also Judges 14:19 ; 15:14-15

The Holy Spirit came upon Samson

h. King Saul 1Sa 11:6  And the Spirit of God came powerfully on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.

i. David. 1Sa 16:13  And Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the spirit of Jehovah came on David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

j. Elijah 1Ki 18:12  And it will be as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of Jehovah shall carry you where I know not. And when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared Jehovah from my youth.

k. Elisha 2Ki 2:15  And when the sons of the prophets across in Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah rests upon Elisha! And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

l. Ezekiel Eze 2:2  And the Spirit entered into me when He spoke to me, and set me on my feet, so that I heard Him who spoke to me.

m. Daniel Dan 4:9  O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. also 5:11; 6:3

The Holy Spirit will come UPON YOU!

n. Micah Mic 3:8  But I truly am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.

o. Azariah 2Ch 15:1  And the spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded:

2Ch 15:2  and he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him he will forsake you.

p. Zechariah the High Priest. 2Ch 24:20  And the spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.

q. Upon Israel’s Elders. Num 11:25  And the LORD came down in the cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.
